The Fort Carson Fire Department is tasked with providing Operations and Technician Level response to all hazardous materials incidents, as well as providing Incident Commanders (IC) to manage the initial phases of these incidents at the department and installation operations centers, on scene incident command center and regional operations commands. All firefighters of the Fort Carson Fire Department are required to be DoD certified to the Hazardous Materials Operations level with more than 90% at the Technician level.  A specialized team of DoD certified Hazardous Materials Technician level responders is assigned at station 32 for immediate dispatch to all hazardous materials spills, releases, and terrorist events.  All fire department officers are certified at the Hazardous Materials Incident Commander level.

A highly specialized hazardous materials apparatus and trailer are maintained at fire Station-32 for the initial dispatch, response, and mitigation of any proposed hazardous materials event to include mass casualty emergencies involving hazardous materials.  Support equipment includes a breathing air compressor trailer (AIR31) stationed and managed by Station 31, a water tender (Tender 33) and decontamination trailer for decontamination operations at Station 33, and a specialized Mobile Incident Command vehicle staffed by the Fort Carson Fire And Emergency Services training and inspections personnel that is readily available for all calls requiring a remote Command Post.  Other Technician level responders are assigned at stations 31, 33, and 34 to augment the response capabilities.  Additional Technician level services are available from the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office by automatic aid agreements, in addition, the Colorado State Patrol will respond when requested.  Federal assistance teams such as the regional Weapons of Mass Destruction-Civil Support Team (Denver, CO) and FBI are available on a delayed response when deemed needed and/or required by the Incident Commander.
