Users Guide

The Installation Design Guide (IDG) is a web-based hyperlinked document.  A hyperlink is specially formatted text that contains an address (in the document, within another document, or on the Internet) that, when followed or clicked on, takes the reader to that link.  Hyperlinks in this IDG are shown bold, underlined, and green in color and they send you to other documents, reference tables, appendices, graphics and maps, and the Internet for further reference or in-depth study on a particular issue.

Users of the IDG are presented with a two-part navigational structure: a top bar with the main sections listed, and an expanding side bar for detail pertaining to each main section listed on the top bar.  Users can also use a hyperlinked Site Map to browse the IDG.  Each name is hyperlinked directly to the beginning of the document that it indicates.  The Table of Contents on the left side bar is expandable and hyperlinked to each section and subsection.

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
To take full advantage of the Fort Carson IDG Web site, you will need to
have the free viewer software of Adobe Flash Player version 8 or newer to
view visual zone maps. Please go to the Adobe site,
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ , for the free player. This does
not constitute endorsement of this product by the U.S. Army. If you require
a hard copy of the material, please contact the IDG POC at (719) 526-8005.

TIPS AND HINTS

Smaller computers (less than 32 MB RAM) may experience problems such as slow performance and lock-ups if you attempt to open two or more interactive maps simultaneously.

If there is a pop-up window blocking software on your computer, you will need to turn it off to view this web site properly.

If you click on an image or a graphic a larger, readable version will pop up in a new window.

printing

There are several different ways to print out this document.  Individual pages may be printed out by right clicking on the page you want to print and selecting print from the pop-up window.  There is also a printer symbol at the top of the first page in each section.  If you click on this symbol a .pdf version of the entire section will pop-up.  This .pdf is formatted with headers and footers for formally printing out each section.

MAP VIEWING

In the Visual Themes & Zones Section the maps are either images or .pdf files requiring no additional software.

In the maps section Adobe Flash Player (8.0 or higher) is used to view the interactive Zone Map.

When viewing the interactive zone map roll over an area to view the zone category.

Click on a zone area to zoom in and find more detailed information.

A white and gold star represents an architectural prototype for that zone. Roll over the star with the mouse pointer to view a picture of the building.

A blue asterix represents a significant building in the zone. Roll over the asterisk with the mouse pointer to view the number of the building.

A purple asterisk represents a gate entrance to the facility. Roll over the asterisk with the mouse pointer to view the name of the gate.

When zoomed in to a zone area roll over with the mouse pointer the "visual analysis map" button to view the visual analysis map. Click on the "visual analysis map" button to open a larger .pdf version of the Visual Analysis Map.

To return to the full base map click once on the "return to main map" button.

The table of contents to the left of the map can also be used to navigate between each zone. Click on the text to zoom into that specific zone.

If viewing the Interactive Flash Map with a low screen resolution or small screen size, click on "View Map Full Size" to the left of the map to view the Interactive Map at full screen size (if unable to see the "View Full Size" button then the Interactive Map is already being viewed at the maximum size). To return to the main IDG click on the "Back" button of your browser.

HOW TO VIEW THE IDG ON YOUR COMPUTER

The IDG application has an Autorun feature which causes the IDG to automatically run when the CD is inserted into your computer’s disk drive.  If the IDG is running slowly, you may want to copy the entire contents of the CD to your hard drive.

If viewing the IDG over your own computer, open the file named splash.htm on your CD-ROM drive.  You should see the IDG Splash page. Click on the image to enter the IDG.

You can also create a shortcut to the IDG by right-clicking on your desktop (anywhere on the screen where it is blank), then follow these steps:

  • You must first save the contents of the CD onto your hard drive or a networked server, taking care that all of the files are saved in a single directory named Fort Carson IDG.

  • Left click New, then Shortcut.

  • Using the browse option, find the folder you saved the IDG application to.  Under the Fort Carson IDG folder, double-click on the splash.htm file.  You may need to change the files of type field to all files as shown on the following page.

  • In Create Shortcut window, left click Next.

  • Type a shortcut name and click Finish.

  • From this point on, you can click on your Fort Carson IDG shortcut icon and go to the IDG directly.

SPECIFIC NAMING INSTRUCTIONS

There are three parts to the page as you are viewing the Fort Carson IDG, as shown below:

Banner (Top navigational bar)
Left Frame (Side Table of Contents Bar)
Main Frame or Body page (contains the Contents of the IDG)

The text that reads “INSTALLATION DESIGN GUIDE” in the upper right corner is linked to the Splash page and acts like your browser's Home button, bringing you back to the beginning of the IDG web page. If you ever get lost while viewing the IDG, this will return you to a known starting point.

You will note a series of links in the top bar of the page. These links will appear on every page and allow you to move through the main sections of the site according to your individual preferences.

If you are not sure where to begin, you can use the Search feature by clicking the Search button in the banner, to locate information on a specific topic, or simply begin at the beginning by reading through the Introduction.

USING THE SEARCH FEATURE

Click on the Search button on the banner, which brings up the search function on the side bar where you may then type the text that you’re looking for.  Once you’re on the desired page, you can further your search on that page by going to the menu bar and selecting Edit and then Find (on this page).  Once you type in the text (or part of the text), the search will be conducted and the text highlighted.
