8.14.4.1 Electrical

Electrical power supply in the United States is available in a number of configurations:  the most common are 120/240 volt single-phase three wire, 120/208 volt 3-phase 4-wire, and 277/480 volt 3-phase 4 wire.

Design standards for interior electrical systems are found in Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) 3-520-01, Interior Electrical Systems.  Compliance with this UFC is mandatory for the design of interior electrical systems.  This UFC:

  • Establishes criteria for the design of interior electrical systems.

  • Establishes system-level design criteria.

  • Establishes facility-level criteria for interior electrical systems.

  • Provides a starting point for determining the applicable design criteria for a facility.

8.14.4.2 Communications

Communications systems handle the transport of telephone and data networks (e.g., video, multi-media, teleconferencing, data transfer, facsimile transmission, and voice conversation).

  • The design criteria for interior wiring of communications and information systems is found in the Technical Guide for Installation Information Infrastructure Architecture (I3A) date March 2006 and in the Fort Carson, Directorate of Information Management (DOIM) standards.  These guides shall be used as the basis for designing the premises’ distribution system (inside plant) and the outside plant cable distribution system for all new construction and renovation projects, for installing Antennas and Support Structures, and installing Cable TV.  See Appendix B for information on how to find existing underground cable routes.

  • The Technical Guide for Installation Information Infrastructure Architecture (I3A) dated March 2006 is Appendix A of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineering Technical Letter (ETL) 1110-3-502, Telephone and Network Distribution System Design and Implementation Guide.

8.14.4.3 Distribution

Distribution of electrical and electronic systems through a building is generally accomplished through branched distribution.  A central chase or trunk will run the length or height of the facility, then horizontal distribution systems run from a central connection closest to the end user.  This distribution may be overhead or underfoot.  In many instances, it is a combination of the two.
