8.14.9.5 Recreational Facilities

Quality recreational facilities are required to maintain a healthy and effective fighting force.  Recreation facilities encompass the most diverse functions of all the categories including:  gymnasiums, fitness centers, golf course clubhouses, bowling alleys, theaters, and others.  Each interior should respond and coordinate with its building activity. 

The recreational facility interiors should have lively color schemes with accent colors that reflect the nature of individual activity spaces within the building.  Natural daylighting and public spaces will be very important to the characteristics of these building types.  Finishes and furnishings should be extremely durable in order to withstand the constant traffic and heavy use facilities will be subjected to throughout the day.  Key elements to making the interior portion of the recreational facilities successful are:

  • Variety of uses.

  • Interior should compliment building function.

  • Lively color scheme to reflect activity level.

  • Extremely durable finishes.

  • Coordinate accent colors with design scheme.

  • Design lighting for specific tasks.
