a coordinated approach to site elements will help promote a positive image |
The topic of exterior site design elements encompasses a wide variety of individual elements. These elements can range from being functional at a very basic level (trash receptacles and fences) to being functional at a symbolic level (displays and flagpoles). The purpose of this section of the IDG is to develop a set of guidelines for site design elements that are appropriate.
A coordinated approach, and a commitment to continuity, will permit site design elements to contribute in a positive manner to the visual image and identity of Fort Carson. This wide range of site design elements can be visually related among themselves with common and repetitive forms, materials, and colors. The repetitive use of visually related items will help provide not only a common installation theme, but can help to visually relate the variety of building types found at Fort Carson.
Site elements include all visual elements of the installation that are considered utilitarian in use. These elements include the following four categories of utilitarian amenities:
Site furnishings.
Sign standards.
Lighting installation.
Utilities.
The four sub-components provide dominant visual impacts within the installation. The specific site element features and equipment should, to the extent possible, reflect the local or regional design standards. This allows for ease of maintenance and blending into the local community. The four sub-components and their visual impacts are discussed in detail in this chapter.
