11.3.12 BOLLARDS

11.3.12.1 Bollards Locations

Bollards shall typically be used throughout the Installation to control and direct vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic, and for force protection purposes. Bollards shall be used in a standardized approach according to the zone or situation in which they are used. Two principal bollard types have been developed. Type A bollards shall be used in association with the post roadway system. Type B bollards shall be used for all other bollard applications and shall be further divided into three levels which are used in the different zones, as outlined in the following paragraphs.

The typical purpose for Type A bollards is to control and direct vehicular traffic associated with all primary, secondary, and tertiary streets of the roadway grid system. The bollards shall be used exclusively in the immediate physical vicinity of the streets, and shall not be used for any other purposes. Following is a list of general areas of application for this type of bollard, but is not intended to exclude similar, valid applications not specifically listed.

Bollards shall be located along street to aid in traffic control and roadway visibility as required at curves, intersections, and potentially hazardous locations.

Typical locations of Type B bollards shall include vehicular control adjacent to access drives and parking lots, including prevention of vehicles from parking on landscaped areas. Type B bollards shall be used as pedestrian/bicycle-traffic control along their respective paths. Bollards are especially useful at pathway intersections and similar areas where pedestrian/bicycle traffic tend to "leak" onto adjacent landscaped areas. Type B bollards shall be used at memorials, monuments, and displays to separate circulation systems from the displayed objects where necessary. They are also to be used to surround, protect, and physically separate miscellaneous utility housings and related items where necessary.

11.3.12.2 Bollards Design

11.3.12.2.1 Type A Bollard

The design of Type A bollards shall consist of B-grade railroad ties, cut and routed to provide detailed interest. White plastic reflectors shall be attached to the side (or sides) of each bollard to aid in traffic control at night. Bollards shall typically be used in a series connected by cabling. Spacing of bollards shall be a minimum of six feet (6') on center, up to a maximum of twelve feet (12') on center.

11.3.12.2.2 Type B Bollard

Level B-1 bollards are a more formal type designed for high visibility areas. As such, they shall be used in the Installation Administration & Support Visual Zone D (including all sub zones). This bollard shall be precast concrete and color shall be natural warm gray. Exposed aggregate and smooth finishes shall be combined to add detail and interest. This bollard shall be designed so it can be used with or without connecting chains. Where chains are used, all parts and connectors shall be painted dark brown with a high gloss finish for added visibility.

Level B-2 bollards are less formal and shall be used in Unit Operations and Maintenance Visual Zone B (including all sub zones), Schools Visual Zone C1, Recreation Visual Zone E, and the Airfield Visual Zone F. This bollard shall be constructed out of steel and used with or without connecting chains. When used, all chains and connectors shall be painted dark brown with a high gloss finish.

Level B-3 bollards are the least formal and shall be used in Logistics and Industrial Visual Zone A and Training and Open Space Visual Zone G. This bollard shall be fabricated from six inch (6") square or round steel tube with a steel plate closure at the top and shall be designed to be used with or without chains. The entire bollard with all chains and connectors shall be painted dark brown with a high gloss finish.
