The elements and symbols of military service and history can provide very effective visual focal points when located and displayed properly.  A monument/memorial area can be successful in communicating important information and promoting a sense of pride in military service.  The minimal existing use of these elements, west of Post Headquarters, needs to be expanded and perhaps refocused.  The following considerations are important to the design of monuments or memorial areas:

  • Memorial or commemorative plaques that honor an individual historical military event should be displayed in an individual manner.

  • Where a group of memorials offers the opportunity for a combined presentation, consideration should be given to consolidating them in a central area appropriate for this purpose.

  • Prominent locations must be selected if military monuments or displays are to be effective as visual focal points.  It is most often appropriate that historical military equipment be consolidated into one area for a combined presentation.

  • Unique focal points can also be created by the controlled use of flagpole groupings.

Static displays should be carefully designed and placed in prominent locations to serve as visual focal points within the installation.  Static displays of equipment should be consolidated in one location to create a central museum or exhibition facility within the installation.
