11.3.19.1 Fire Hydrant Design

Fire hydrants are to be standardized.  Fire hydrants are to be painted brown and reflective tape is to be applied for visibility at night.  The caps should be color coded per Fire hydrants shall be highly visible and free of any screening.  They shall be painted the IMCOM specified Nutmeg Brown color with luminous paint. Caps shall be painted the appropriate NFPA/ AWWA color to indicate tested water flow.  Hydrant shall be open left style.

Classification and Color Marking for Fire Hydrants

Class AAA - Capacity of over 3000 GPM - Blue bonnet and hose connection covers

Class AA - Capacity of 1500 GPM - Light Blue

Class A - Capacity of 1000-1499 GPM - Green

Class B - Capacity of 500-999 GPM - Orange

Class C - Capacity less than 500 GPM - Red

Note:  The Class B marking is listed as Orange, but the color could be indistinguishable between orange and red at night; and the color may be changed to yellow.

Fire Department standards for Fire Hydrants:

  • Fire Hydrants and access roadways are to be serviceable and unobstructed prior to and during construction.

  • Hydrants are to face the proper direction with the steamer connection toward the roadway.

  • The proper distance from the curb face (minimum of 3' and maximum of 7') is to be provided
