11.3.5.1 Kiosk Location

This guideline will provide general direction for kiosk design and placement.  The styles of kiosk design respond to different visual zones, pedestrian activity, and context.  Along with the other site furnishings, they will help introduce a visual continuity to the base.  Kiosks can be used as information centers at pedestrian nodes around the installation.  Provide kiosks only where they are needed.  Kiosks shall be installed on a concrete base adjacent to walkways.  Allow a minimum of 3’ clearance on all sides.

Pedestrian oriented kiosks shall be placed in strategic locations for effective visual communication of all posted messages.  Where possible, they should be grouped with other site furnishings and placed adjacent to major pedestrian paths.  A partial listing of typical locations is given here as a minimum, but should not be limited to only the areas mentioned.  The areas are:

  • For buildings or groups of buildings with high concentrations of public use and/or high visibility such as the community center area, the administration area, and the recreation area, one (1) or more kiosks shall be provided based on individual facility needs.
  • One (1) kiosk shall be located in courtyard and plaza areas of major administrative and community/commercial buildings.
  • One (1) kiosk shall be located within thirty feet (30’) (9.14 m) of major pedestrian path intersections and major pedestrian activity nodes, where volume of user traffic dictates the need.
  • One (1) kiosk shall be located within fifty feet (50’) (15.24 m) of individual recreation type building facilities, large picnic areas and groups of outdoor recreation fields, particularly recreation areas where large groups of players or observers congregate frequently.
  • One (1) kiosk shall be located in or near all other activity "nodes" where a consistent concentration of pedestrian traffic dictates the need.

11.3.5.2 Kiosk Design

Kiosk design should blend compatibly with other site furnishings and with the architectural character of the visual zone in terms of form, scale, and materials.
