11.3.7 Trash recycling and Ash Receptacle11.3.7.1 Trash Receptacle LocationTrash and Recycling receptacles should be highly visible and accessible for effective litter control. Containers should be located conveniently along walkways, near major pedestrian intersections, near building entrances, and near seating and eating areas. Antiterrorism/force protection requirements restrict the location of dumpsters to a minimum of 10 meters (33 feet) from inhabited buildings and 25 meters (82 feet) from billeting and primary gathering areas (Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) 4-010-01, DoD Minimum Antiterrorism Standards for Buildings, Table B-1). Trash receptacles should be located in areas where they are needed, but should not be displayed as significant site features. Trash receptacles shall be placed in order to create the most effective litter control. They shall be placed in close proximity to pedestrian areas and, if possible, set adjacent to other site furnishings.
11.3.7.2 Trash Receptacle DesignContainer should be of a design that is compatible and in harmony with other site furnishings in the area. All receptacles in a given area shall be consistent. The trash receptacles shall be of durable construction and treated for outdoor use. Receptacles shall serve a utilitarian function and shall be simple and unobtrusive in appearance. 11.3.7.2.1 Level 1 ReceptaclesLevel 1 trash and recylcing receptacles shall be used in coordination with other Level 1 site furnishings. The Level 1 trash receptacles are formal, substantial and shall be used for all receptacles located in the Installation Administration & Support Visual Zone D. The receptacle is a reinforced precast concrete with an exposed aggregate standard finish of crushed limestone and natural sand, coated with a clear acrylic sealer. 11.3.7.2.2 Level 2 ReceptaclesLevel 2 trash and recylcing receptacles shall be a less formal design and shall be used in conjunction with other Level 2 Site Furnishings in the Logistics and Industrial Visual Zone A, Unit Operations and Maintenance Zone B, Recreation Visual Zone E, Airfield Visual Zone F, and Training and Open Space Visual Zone G. This type of receptacle is constructed out of vinyl-coated steel. The receptacle is to be green throughout Fort Carson. Brown can be used in Zone B3, Unit Operations and Maintenance Zone south of Prussman Blvd. 11.3.7.2.3 Level 3 ReceptaclesLevel 3 trash and recylcing receptacles are an alternate utilitarian trash receptacle that is approved for use in low visibility areas of the supply/storage and maintenance zones. This type of trash receptacle should consist of standard 55-gallon oil drums that are un-dented, clean, and are either new or recycled. All utility cans should be painted a low luster, standard dark brown color. 11.3.7.3 Trash Receptacle Standard
11.3.7.4 Ash ReceptaclesTrash receptacles may be fitted with a lid containing an ash tray. Small ash receptacles or smoking towers may be added at building entrances if necessary to keep the location clean.
