11.3.9 Planters11.3.9.1 Planters Location
Movable precast concrete planters may be used outside building entrances to provide seasonal color and interest and function as security threat barriers. Planters should be located so they block uninterrupted vehicular access to a building, but not so they excessively impede pedestrian movement. Several planters of various sizes should be grouped together to produce an aesthetically pleasing display. Permanent planters such as raised planting beds with small retaining walls can also be incorporated into the overall landscape design for a facility. These planter walls can be used as seating walls as well. See the Bench section for more information on seating walls. Planters may be placed in strategic locations for maximum visual impact. Where possible, they should be grouped with other site furnishings and placed adjacent to major pedestrian paths. A partial listing of typical locations is given here as a minimum, but should not be limited to only the areas mentioned. The areas are:
11.3.9.2 Planters DesignPlanters are to be made of high quality Portland cement. All exposed surfaces of the product are to be chemically treated (not sandblasted) to remove the surface matrix and expose the aggregate. The planters are then to be treated with water-repellent sealer.
