11.4.7.1 Information/Identification Signs (Non-Traffic Signs)These are signs that identify entrances to the installation, areas within the installation, major tenants, buildings, and organizational or functional components. They identify a location, and guide or greet the visitor to that location. They should be compatible in scale and character with the architecture and also blend with the natural surroundings.
These signs are designed to include the following: 11.4.7.1.1 Typeface
11.4.7.1.2 Color
11.4.7.1.3 Materials
11.4.7.1.4 Military HeadquartersMilitary headquarters identification signs are separated into four categories and sizes in order to distinguish the different levels of unit authority. The sign face carries the unit name. The Level 1 sign is the installation headquarters sign; the Level 2 sign is the brigade/regiment headquarters sign; and the Level 3 sign is the battalion/squadron headquarters sign.
11.4.7.1.5 Military Facility Identification SignsMilitary facility identification signs are used to identify company/troop level organizations and other military facilities not included in the installation identification or military headquarters sign types.
11.4.7.1.6 Centralized Military FacilitiesThese signs shall be used to identify multiple units residing in one building or a related complex of buildings. This type sign shall also be used to identify a major service unit made up of sub-services that are visited by a significant number of military and civilian personnel. If a major service unit has more than three sub-services, the sign panel size shall be extended vertically in six inch (6") increments as required to maintain appropriate spacing dimensions. More information can be found at Technical Manual (TM) 5-807-10, Signage. Specific room numbers of activities/services/individuals will not be placed on exterior signs, but will be provided on “directories” located inside primary entrances of applicable buildings. Multiple identification signs for one facility are generally not permitted, except when the facility is occupied by multiple battalion level or higher headquarters or when the identification sign will include personal names authorized by this IDG. Where several different organizations are located in one building, the centralized military facility signage shown below is used. Exceptions are approved by the DPW on a case by case basis. 11.4.7.1.7 Community FacilitiesCommunity identification signs are used to identify activities and facilities used for community, recreational, and other non-military purposes. Although TM 5-807-10 specifies a blue background color, these types signs will follow the same format and color as other information and identification signs on Fort Carson for uniformity throughout the installation. The use of commercial and community related symbols and logo types is encouraged to add color, identity, and visual interest to the signs. More information can be found at Technical Manual (TM) 5-807-10, Signage.
The standards to apply for signage color, type, and sizing are found in Technical Manual (TM) 5-807-10, Signage.
11.4.7.1.8 Names on Information/Identification Signs
Personal names are only authorized to be displayed on building identification signs for higher level military headquarters (battalion level and above), installation level directorates, and limited comparable major tenant activities (i.e., AAFES General Manager). Limited exceptions will be considered, and requests for exceptions must be submitted first to DPW for subsequent review and approval by the Garrison Commander. All authorized personal names will be placed on separate hanging signs below the primary facility sign. Intent is to easily replace the name as personnel are reassigned without having to re-make the facility sign. In all cases, no more than two names are authorized on one information/identification sign. The following are examples of positions that warrant a name on a sign. Names on signs indicate importance of position:
The following is supplemental guidance for name signs:
11.4.7.1.9 Hours of Operation on Information/Identification SignsHours of operation are typically not permitted on street side building identification signs. Hours of operation for a facility should be placed on the entrance to the facility. Hours of operation are allowed on building identification signage when the building offers a population service or is a community support facility whose hours of operation are not regular work hours. Examples are: Chapel (service times), Post exchange, Commissary, Theater, Shopette, Dining facility, Youth center, Troop medical clinic, Dental clinic.
Requests for exception to this policy should be addressed through the DPW to the GC.
