11.4.7.1 Information/Identification Signs (Non-Traffic Signs)

These are signs that identify entrances to the installation, areas within the installation, major tenants, buildings, and organizational or functional components.  They identify a location, and guide or greet the visitor to that location.  They should be compatible in scale and character with the architecture and also blend with the natural surroundings.

  • DPW will be responsible for adding postal address signage, as applicable, which will be located on the top of the street side of the building identification sign.

  • No insignia of any kind is allowed on information/identification signs of any kind.

  • Directories or names of extra organizations in the facility will not be allowed on building identification signage.  Utilize building directories inside the facility entrances for these purposes.

These signs are designed to include the following:

11.4.7.1.1 Typeface
  • Lettering is self-adhesive backing material.

  • Building Title:  Helvetica medium, upper and lower case.

  • Building Numbers:  Helvetica medium.

  • Building Addresses:  Helvetica medium, upper and lower case.
11.4.7.1.2 Color
  • Panel:  dark brown.

  • Lettering:  white reflective.

  • Post:  dark brown.

  • Exposed panel backs and edges:  dark brown.

  • All paint:  gloss.

11.4.7.1.3 Materials
  • Panel:  double-face aluminum; .080” minimum thickness.

  • Post:  steel pipe (Telespar for traffic signage).

  • Foundation:  concrete pier or direct burial.

11.4.7.1.4 Military Headquarters

Military headquarters identification signs are separated into four categories and sizes in order to distinguish the different levels of unit authority.  The sign face carries the unit name.  The Level 1 sign is the installation headquarters sign; the Level 2 sign is the brigade/regiment headquarters sign; and the Level 3 sign is the battalion/squadron headquarters sign.

11.4.7.1.4.1 Installation Headquarters

Level 1 sign is used to identify both division and installation headquarters.  As long as headquarters of the division and the installation share the same facilities at Fort Carson, the unit name should be placed below the installation name.  More information can be found at Technical Manual (TM) 5-807-10, Signage.

11.4.7.1.5 Military Facility Identification Signs

Military facility identification signs are used to identify company/troop level organizations and other military facilities not included in the installation identification or military headquarters sign types.

11.4.7.1.5.1 Unit and Installation Motor Pools

These signs shall be used to identify motor pools throughout Fort Carson.  Up to two names are authorized below the facility sign for these facilities.  Insignias, branch colors, and unit mottos are not permitted on this signage level.

11.4.7.1.5.2 Company/Troop Headquarters

These identification signs are used to identify company/troop level units. Insignias, branch colors, unit mottos, and names and/or titles of individuals are not permitted on this level of signage.  At Fort Carson, company/troop headquarters signage is often placed on the building next to the headquarters entrance.

11.4.7.1.5.3 Directorate/Installation Office Headquarters

These signs shall be used to identify directorates and other types of major service units on Fort Carson.

As seen in the figure above, arrows can be used on informational signage when needed to clarify where the facility is located.

11.4.7.1.6 Centralized Military Facilities

These signs shall be used to identify multiple units residing in one building or a related complex of buildings.  This type sign shall also be used to identify a major service unit made up of sub-services that are visited by a significant number of military and civilian personnel.  If a major service unit has more than three sub-services, the sign panel size shall be extended vertically in six inch (6") increments as required to maintain appropriate spacing dimensions.  More information can be found at Technical Manual (TM) 5-807-10, Signage.  Specific room numbers of activities/services/individuals will not be placed on exterior signs, but will be provided on “directories” located inside primary entrances of applicable buildings.

Multiple identification signs for one facility are generally not permitted, except when the facility is occupied by multiple battalion level or higher headquarters or when the identification sign will include personal names authorized by this IDG.  Where several different organizations are located in one building, the centralized military facility signage shown below is used.  Exceptions are approved by the DPW on a case by case basis.

11.4.7.1.7 Community Facilities

Community identification signs are used to identify activities and facilities used for community, recreational, and other non-military purposes.  Although TM 5-807-10 specifies a blue background color, these types signs will follow the same format and color as other information and identification signs on Fort Carson for uniformity throughout the installation.  The use of commercial and community related symbols and logo types is encouraged to add color, identity, and visual interest to the signs.  More information can be found at Technical Manual (TM) 5-807-10, Signage.

11.4.7.1.7.1 Primary Facilities

These signs shall be used to identify major community facilities such as the Commissary and Main Post Exchange.  These signs should be reserved for major facilities and based on their scale, importance, and frequency of use.  A symbol or logo may be placed to the left and above the facility name.

11.4.7.1.7.2 Secondary Facilities

This level of community facility signage shall be used to identify smaller-scale community buildings and activities such as credit unions, child care centers, shopettes, or youth centers.  The design intent and many details are similar to those referenced under primary community facilities.

The standards to apply for signage color, type, and sizing are found in Technical Manual (TM) 5-807-10, Signage.

11.4.7.1.8 Names on Information/Identification Signs

names on signage

Personal names are only authorized to be displayed on building identification signs for higher level military headquarters (battalion level and above), installation level directorates, and limited comparable major tenant activities (i.e., AAFES General Manager).  Limited exceptions will be considered, and requests for exceptions must be submitted first to DPW for subsequent review and approval by the Garrison Commander.  All authorized personal names will be placed on separate hanging signs below the primary facility sign.  Intent is to easily replace the name as personnel are reassigned without having to re-make the facility sign.

In all cases, no more than two names are authorized on one information/identification sign.

The following are examples of positions that warrant a name on a sign.  Names on signs indicate importance of position:

  • Senior ranking Officer of military unit.

  • Senior ranking NCO of military unit.

  • Directors.

  • Deputy Directors.

The following is supplemental guidance for name signs:

  • Signs with personal names are not to be mounted on buildings.

  • Personal names of staff members will not be placed on signs such as at unit motor pools, dining facilities, or medical clinics.  Additionally, no “facility manager” names are permitted on building signage.

  • Names will not be placed on signs identifying recreational and support facilities such as at the golf course, child development centers, AAFES, or contract vendor operated facilities.

11.4.7.1.9 Hours of Operation on Information/Identification Signs

Hours of operation are typically not permitted on street side building identification signs.  Hours of operation for a facility should be placed on the entrance to the facility.  Hours of operation are allowed on building identification signage when the building offers a population service or is a community support facility whose hours of operation are not regular work hours.  Examples are:

Chapel (service times), Post exchange, Commissary, Theater, Shopette, Dining facility, Youth center, Troop medical clinic, Dental clinic.
