pedestrian level lighting

Lighting shall be used to illuminate pedestrian/bicycle circulation paths throughout the Cantonment Area and Butts AAF.  Two basic design levels shall be incorporated: one which is a more formal, upscale approach for use in high-visibility areas, and another, more standard approach for use in all other areas.  These two design levels shall be referred to as Path Lighting Levels 1 and 2 and are described in the following paragraphs.

11.5.2.1 Path Lighting Level I

This level shall be the more formal type and is to be used for all path lighting in the Administration & Support Visual Zone D.  Lighting for this level shall have the following characteristics:

  • Lamp type - metal halide.

  • Fixture mounting - single mount at poles located along pedestrian and bicycle paths. At path intersections, where paths cross streets, and at similar hazardous locations, double mount fixtures shall be employed.  At plazas, courtyards, building entries, and similar focal points, four (4) mount fixtures shall be used.  Bollard lights shall have integrally designed fixtures located within the bollard itself.

  • Pole - Type P-2, dark bronze anodized aluminum. Fixture mounting height shall be fifteen feet (15').  Pole spacing shall typically be ninety feet (90') maximum along paths, and poles shall be placed near ramps, steps, intersections, and similar hazardous areas.  Bollard light spacing shall typically be thirty feet (30') maximum along paths.

  • Fixture - Types F-3 and F-4, dark bronze anodized aluminum.

  • Base - Type B-l shall be used at plazas, courtyards, and similar areas where the pole is totally surrounded by a finished pathway surface.  Type B-2 shall be used at all other pole or bollard locations.

  • Recommended lighting level - 0.6 minimum average maintained horizontal footcandles at typical pathway location: 1.0 at ramps, steps, street intersections, pathway intersections, and similar hazardous locations; and 2.0 at plazas, courtyards, building entrances, and similar focal points.

11.5.2.2 Path Lighting Level 2

This level shall be less formal and is to be used at in zones A, B, C, E, F, and G.  Lighting for this level shall contain characteristics as follows:

  • Lamp type - metal halide.

  • Fixture mounting - single mount at poles located along typical sections of paths.  At pathway intersections, where paths cross streets, at plazas, courtyards, building entries, and similar locations, double mount fixtures shall be used.

  • Pole - Type P-1, mill finish aluminum.  Fixture mounting height shall be fifteen feet (15'). Pole spacing shall typically be ninety feet (90') maximum along paths and poles shall be located near ramps, steps, intersections, and similar hazardous areas.

  • Fixture - Type F-2 at all single mount applications and Type F-6 at all double mount applications.  All fixtures shall be mill finish aluminum.

  • Base - Type B-1 at plazas, courtyards, and similar locations where the pole is totally surrounded by a finished pathway surface.  Type B-2 at all other locations.

Recommended lighting level shall be as described for Path Lighting Level 1, located elsewhere in this guideline.
