parking lot lighting

Lighting for parking lots shall be provided on three basic design levels.  The first shall be a more formal, upscale approach for use in high visibility areas.  The second shall be a rather standard approach to parking lot lighting in POV (privately owned vehicles) lots.  The third shall be a more utilitarian approach used for large parking lots in motor pools, maintenance, and similar non-POV areas.  These three design levels shall be referred to as PL-1, PL-2, and PL-3.

11.5.3.1 Level Pl-1 Lighting

This level shall be the more formal type and shall be applicable to all parking lots in Administration & Support Visual Zone D.  Lighting for this level shall have the following characteristics:

  • Lamp type - color corrected mercury vapor.

  • Fixture mounting - single mount at poles located along the perimeter of parking lots and double mount at poles located at the "interior” of parking lots.

  • Pole - Type P-2, aluminum, dark bronze anodized finish.  For parking lots with more than forty (40) spaces, the fixture mounting height shall be forty feet (40'), and pole spacing shall be one hundred twenty feet (I20') on center typical.  At parking lots with forty (40) or fewer spaces, the fixture mounting height shall be twenty-five feet (25') and pole spacing shall be ninety feet (90') on center typical.

  • Fixture - Type F-3, dark bronze anodized aluminum finish.

  • Base - Type B-2 for poles located along the perimeter of parking lots or located on "islands" or "peninsulas" at the interior of parking lots.  Type B-3 for poles located at the interior of parking lots where they are directly adjacent to parking spaces.

  • Recommended lighting level - 1.0 minimum average maintained horizontal footcandles.

For this level of parking lot lighting, a notable exception exists in the immediate vicinity of the Evans Army Community Hospital (Zone D-4).  For this area, painted galvanized steel poles and fixtures have been used.  When replacing poles in this specific existing area, new poles shall be of materials and finish to match.  However, as new areas develop within Hospital Zone, lighting shall follow the guidelines described above for Level PL-1 lighting.

The excepted lighting characteristics, which specifically differ from the standard Level PL-1 Lighting, are as follows:

  • Pole - Type P-2, galvanized steel, painted Federal Standard Color (FSC) #22144 (rust/orange).

  • Fixture - Type F-3, galvanized steel, painted FSC #22144 (rust/orange).
