COL Robert F. McLaughlin

Colonel Robert F. McLaughlin became the Fort Carson U.S. Army Garrison Commander on June 30, 2009. Colonel McLaughlin received his commission as a Second Lieutenant from the ROTC program at the University of Massachusetts in 1985. His military education includes the Field Artillery Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Combined Arms Service Staff School and the Command and General Staff College and he holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He recently graduated from the U.S. Army War College with the class of 2009.
Colonel McLaughlin has served in a variety of command and staff positions. His first assignment was in Germany with the 2nd Armored Division Forward where he served as a Platoon Leader, Fires Direction Officer and Company Fire Support Officer. He was subsequently assigned to the 7th Infantry Division (Light) at Fort Ord, California, where he served as a Battery Commander and Battalion Fire Support Officer. He was then assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas, where his duties included Assistant Division Fire Support Coordinator (Plans), Division Artillery Operations Officer, and Battalion Executive Officer. Following that, he was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he served as the Division Deputy Fire Support Coordinator. He then returned to the 1st Cavalry Division, where he served as a Field Artillery Battalion Commander as part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team at Fort Bliss, Texas.
Colonel McLaughlin has participated in a variety of deployments including Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia-Herzegovina as part of Multi-National Division North, where he served as the Division Chief of Operations and Plans Officer in 1999. During his assignment with the 2nd Marine Division, he participated in Operation Enduring Freedom as the Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa Joint Fires Officer in 2003. He has two tours of duty as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. First he served with the 2nd Marine Division in the Al-Anbar province, where he was the Division Fire and Effects Coordinator in 2005. Most recently he commanded the 5th Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, Fourth Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. The battalion deployed to Northern Iraq as a maneuver task force as part of Multi-National Division North and conducted counterinsurgency operations in support of the 2007 Surge.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (6), Joint Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (6), Army Achievement Medal (6), Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Ranger Tab and Combat Action Badge.Back to Leaders Page
