BBS was developed for brigade and battalion commanders to train their battle staffs in combat and battlefield operating procedures. It is the U.S. Army's Command and Staff trainer for the Brigade and Battalion level and is a part of the Combined Arms Training Strategy for simulations.
BBS is designed to provide commanders a tool to train, exercise, and evaluate their battle staff in a realistic, high-fidelity and real-time simulation exercise. The commander and battle staff conduct operations and issue orders and information from their location to the simulation center. Operators in the simulation center implement these instructions as they are received. The operators then provide information generated by the simulation to the staff. This information includes the results of unit movement, contact, and conflict with threat forces, unit's) status, and unit requests for supplies and support. The information flow between these groups continues until exercise completion.
BBS is a three-sided, free-play simulation model played in a real time combat environment to create a stressful environment for the training audience (Bde/Bn Staff). Movement, conflict and battle damage affect supply, ammunition and fuel levels for all units. Enemy prisoners of war/civilian refugees (EPW/CIV) in the simulation represent factions for which both blue and red forces must accommodate. In addition, BBS presents multi-factional forces referred to as Unknown Forces that model multi-action/multi-interaction scenarios, coalition warfare, multi-force operations, or United Nations charter operations. When used properly, BBS is an excellent training tool to refine war-fighting skills with practical experience on the simulated battlefield and to evaluate the units Mission Essential Task List (METL).
