The Fixed Tactical Internet program has been structured to support the local and visiting digitized units on the ground by providing network initiation, sustainment and communications security (COMSEC) support.
Each Fixed Tactical Internet site has been designed to provide a greater training capability for units utilizing EPLRS radios, and provide coverage across a secure enclosed network. Each network possessed by the installation is capable of supporting a BDE size element without signal degradation. All radio antennas within the FTI program are mounted on towers between 50 and 100feet tall to maximize line-of-site coverage and provide realistic combat network coverage.
The purpose of the networks within the FTI program are to provide the secure routing protocol for situational awareness between terrestrial FBCB2 platforms. All FBCB2 platforms utilized are matched with EPLRS radios using a common database. Each database design is specific to the units training, and assist the platform with the identification of each icon that appears across the FBCB2 situational awareness map. Although some unit elements are not retrofitted with EPLRS radios; the common database is structured to route information through the FM or ASIP radio being used. This allows all personnel required, to receive the proper situational awareness.
Although the terrestrial systems operation is the first priority, the FTI networks are not limited to just this capability. Utilizing additional equipment, the FTI program has been able to link a network to a non-terrestrial "white box" platform, providing one-way situational awareness feeds into a conference room, for leadership viewing.
