Command Sergeant Major's Bio

CSM Shannon Caviness is a native of Jackson, Mississippi. She entered the U.S. Army on 20 January 1987. She completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana as a Personnel Management Specialist (75C).

CSM Caviness' assignments include tours with 187th Personnel Services Center, Manheim, Germany; 7th Signal Command, Fort Ritchie, Maryland; 6th Infantry Division (Light), Fort Wainwright, Alaska; 203rd Personnel Services Company, Fort Wainwright, Alaska; Gastonia Recruiting Station, Gastonia, North Carolina; 36th Signal Battalion, Camp Walker, Korea; Charlie Detachment, 516th Personnel Services Battalion, Camp Henry, Korea; 23rd Area Support Group, Camp Humphreys, Korea; 8th Personnel Command, Camp Coiner, Korea; United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (USASMA), Ft. Bliss, Texas; 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas; 8th Human Resources Sustainment Center, Fort Shafter, Hawaii; and North American Aerospace Defense Command – U.S. Northern Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

Her military education includes the Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course (Commandant's List), Recruiter Course, Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, Defense Equal Opportunity Advisor Course (Commandant's List), First Sergeant Course (Commandant's List), Postal Operations Course, and Postal Supervisors Course. She is a graduate of the United States Army's Sergeants Major Academy Class 56. Her civilian education includes an Associate of Science Degree in Liberal Arts from Hagerstown University, Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and Management from Wayland Baptist University, and a Master of Science Degree in Management from Troy State University.

CSM Caviness' military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (one Silver and two Bronze OLCs); Army Commendation Medal (4OLC); Army Achievement Medal (3OLC) and the Army Recruiting Badge (2Sapphires). She is a member of the prestigious Sergeant Audie Murphy Club. She was also awarded the Adjutant General's Corps Regimental Association award and medal, Horatio Gates Bronze award and the Theodore Roosevelt Medal.
