Biography
Colonel Gregory F. Sierra was commissioned as an Infantry officer after graduating from the United States Military Academy in 1990. His first assignment was in 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division at Fort Ord, CA and Fort Lewis, WA. While assigned there from 1991 to 1994, he served as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, Headquarters Company Executive Officer and Battalion S1.
After completing the Armor Officer Advanced Course, Sierra served as a Brigade Assistant S3 in 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, GA from 1995 to 1997. He then took command of C Company, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment from 1997 to 1998. After command, he was assigned to the National Training Center from 1998 to 2002, where he served as a Company and Battalion Assistant S3 Observer Controller Trainer on the Tarantula Light/Airborne Training Team. He then served as the Brigade Tactical Analysis Facility Senior Analyst on the Bronco Team.
After the Command and General Staff College, Sierra served as a Battalion Executive Officer in 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division in Korea from 2003 to 2005. While there he deployed with the battalion to Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Following the deployment, Sierra served as an instructor in the Center for Army Tactics, Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS from 2005 to 2008.
Sierra then assumed command of 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart from 2008 to 2011. While in command, his unit served as part of the CBRNE Consequence Management Force (CCMRF) and then deployed as part of an Advise and Assist Brigade to Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and NEW DAWN. After command, Sierra returned to the National Training Center, where he served as the G3 from 2011 to 2012.
His most recent assignment was as a student at the College of Naval Warfare, Naval War College in Newport, RI.
Sierra has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Systems Engineering from the United States Military Academy, a Masters of Military Arts and Science from the Command and General Staff College and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.
His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Senior Parachutist Badge, the Ranger Tab and the Sapper Tab.
