Biography
Command Sergeant Major Randy S. Varner enlisted into the United States Army in June 1983 under the Delayed Entry Program and started Basic Combat Training in September 1983 at Fort Knox, Kentucky and Advanced Individual Training for Food Service Specialist at Fort Lee, Virginia.
During his 24 years of service, Varner has held positions including: Food Service Specialist, Class 1 Supervisor, Dining Facility Shift Leader, Squad Leader, Section Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, Assistant Dining Facility Manager, Dining Facility Manager, Brigade Food Service Advisor, Commanding Generals Enlisted Aide, Division G4 Food Service Sergeant Major and Battalion Command Sergeant Major.
Varner's assignments include Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Combat Aviation Maintenance Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, Gilbelshdat, Germany; Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 125th Signal Battalion Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 25th Infantry Division (Light), Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Headquarters and Headquarters Company 170th Armor Battalion, 5th Infantry Division, Fort Polk, Louisiana; United States Transportation Command, Scoot Air Force Base, Illinois; Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Headquarters, 1st Corps, Fort Lewis, Washington; Headquarters Company, United States Engineer Center, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; Headquarters Company, United States Army, Fort Myer, Virginia; Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 1st Armor Division, Wiesbaden, Germany; Headquarters, 325th Brigade Support Battalion, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; and Headquarters, 43rd Special Troops Battalion, Fort Carson Colorado.
His previous assignments as a command sergeant major are CSM of the 325th Brigade Support Battalion and Command Sergeant Major of the 43rd Special Troops Battalion. He is a graduate of the US Army Airborne Course, Air Assault Course, Armed Services Culinary Upgrade Program, Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course, Advanced Non-Commissioned Officer Course, and the Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy.
The command sergeant major has been recognized as a recipient of the Distinguished Order of Saint Martin Award; the Department of the Army Award for Culinary Excellence, Philip A. Connelly Award; and as the Armed Service Culinary Specialist of the Year for Hawaii, for Fiscal Years 1988 and 1989. His Awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (5OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (3OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (6OLC), the Army Good Conduct Medal (w/7 knots), two National Defense Service Medals, the Korean Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal (w/ 2 stars), The Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (w/numeral 4 ), the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon (w/numeral 5), the Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon, the Combat Action Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge, and the Drivers and Mechanics Badges.
